One novel....3 styles
This was the second project that I created for Photoshop. The assignment was to take one novel and create 3 different covers for it. One in a traditional style, one in a minimalist style and one in an experimental style.
This first one is what I feel represents a traditional cover for a novel. I had originally rendered it in black and white, but it was suggested to me to try a sepia overlay to give it a more authentic vintage look and feel, as well as helping it fit with the other two designs as one cohesive piece.
This is the minimalist cover. Here I have created a silhouette of an elephant and have placed the title in a marquee shape, reminiscent of a circus sign.
This is my experimental version of the novel. The original had a glitter overlay and had a busier background. I added a simpler background which I think draws the eye to the title and the woman. I also used a different type face and used a clipping mask to make the title appear water-like.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
These are just awesome! Really cool ideas going on here.
ReplyDeleteTraditional Cover: I do like the sepia but I feel it really needs more contrast filters so we can better see the details like the ferris wheel and the elephant in the background.
Minimalist Cover: I love the marque and the pops of color. The thing I would change is make the elephants eyes a different color, as the red makes it look angry.
Experimental Cover: There is something about this one that draws me more than the other two, so I would say it's my favorite of the three. The water text is a great idea; I would just make it a lighter blue to add more contrast between its color and the green in the background.
Other than that, these are so good! I like them a lot.
Jen, these are well thought out cover designs! I would have to say the third one is my favorite because of the amazing texture throughout. Great choice of typeface, but I agree with Chelsea to make it a lighter blue.
ReplyDeleteHmmm.... I'm wondering if you need to choose between them. Why not show at least 2 of them on the opposing pages of your physical portfolio? Showing that you can create multiple solutions. Adding a bit more contrast to the sepia one isn't a bad idea... but of course if this is supposed to be a victorian-era cover, too much contrast will work against that. Consider pulling the by-line up to sit under the title. The minimalist cover design is my favorite, for sure. It appears to be done as it is - nice work. #3 is confusing to me... the image suggests a retro period design, and is very strong. But the typography isn't working with the image. So, maybe choosing an already busy circus display font to add texture to... is too much? I would suggest you choose another font to add water too (yes, make sure we think it is water - light blue would go a long way to helping that) or find another way to colorize that 1800s fancy font.
