2 Covers reworked

I have reworked the traditional and experimental versions of my book cover design projects.  In the traditional, I have explored the idea of using typography, rather than using a composited design.  I like it a lot more. In the experimental design,  I changed the type face and the clipping mask to look more like water. (The woman on the cover represents the circus performer who rides the elephant during performances, and who is a major character in the novel. I wanted the reader to be curious about this woman and why she is important.)  I look forward to feedback.  Thanks!

  1. I really like the typographic cover and how you used type to make shape inside the elephant shape. The colors work really well together, and I like how you included the NY Times best seller at the top in white. As for the experimental one I feel as though the textured type doesn't fit well with the overall background. I think maybe just a solid, distressed texture inside the words would be better suited for this particular design.

  2. The first design seems quite dark... and I'm not sure we will find the title within that elephant shape as easily as we would need to. Can you work some light values into the design, particularly where the title lives? The bottom design incorporates a great image of the performer, and I know you have worked on the typography... but I'm not sure it's successful quite yet. It's appears really busy at that size... so, why not enlarge the title? A lot... it might become more readable? The by-line at bottom should probably not contain water texture, but rather be a supporting element on the cover... we'll find it when we need it.
