Project 5: Scary Story Cover

Hey guys. This is my original cover for my horror story The Witch Well. (It was going to be published in MWCCs literary magazine in April but that may not happen now, unfortunately, with everything going on.) I was excited to re-vamp the cover though. The original version is all black and white with the forrest looking not quite as strong in the background. In peer review, there was an idea to add pops of red, so I have done that here, giving an ominous tone without giving too much away about the scary elements of the story. Maybe if I turn this into a full book, this could be the cover. So, feedback would be appreciated. If you want to read the story, let me know here and I'll email it or send a google drive link to you. Thanks! Hope you guys have been staying safe and healthy.

  1. Chelsea - this is your artwork? I' asking because it really looks profession! I wonder if the artwork is a bit high in the composition... crowding the title? There is plenty of room to slide it down, right?

    1. Coni, the well, stones and forrest are actually free photos from Pixabay. I put lots of color filters on them in PS, lighting effects, and the oil paint filter to make them look like a painting. I figured if at some point I wanted to try and illustrate it on my own I could replace it with my own work, but since they were labeled as free-for-reuse photos, I thought it was ok to edit them and make them into the cover I wanted. Yes. I agree; everything could certainly be moved down lower. Thanks!

  2. I think adding the red to the well was a brilliant idea and overall design work looks fantastic. Along with moving things lower as stated above, I would move the title just a few spaces above the artwork to give them a little separation. I love how this cover has evolved. Awesome work!
